Chamber Music

Chamber music offers musicians the chance to perform together in small ensembles. The Symphony Academy accepts participants at all levels of experience, on a variety of instruments. Students receive thoughtful placement in small ensembles and explore chamber repertoire. During each 60-minute session, an instructor coaches groups on the principals of ensemble playing. During their years in the program, students gain experience working with different instructors and chamber combinations. Groups will have the opportunity to perform at a variety of events in the Des Moines area. Pre-existing groups are welcome, but for those without a formed group an audition will be required for placement.

Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras Honors Ensembles

Students from the Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras are chosen to participate in the Honors String Quartet, the Honors Woodwind Quintet, the Honors Brass Quintet and the Honors Percussion Ensemble.

Winter Flute Choir

Celebrate the winter season! Join a group of “festive flutists.” Develop your ensemble playing skills and your individual technique by being a part of this popular winter flute ensemble. Winter themed music is featured and instrumentation includes piccolo, alto and bass flute as well as string bass, percusion and vocalists. Past performances have included the Des Moines Art Center’s “Winter Magic,” the Des Moiens Symphony Academy’s fundraiser at Barnes and Noble, Des Moines Golf and Country Club, Festival of Trees, Downtown Winter Farmer’s Market and Terrace Hill. New members may be required to audition.

Zauberflote Quartet

Zauberflote is an elite flute ensemble selected by audition only and includes up to 5 flutists. The group rehearses year-round and performs extensively throughout the Des Moines area. Past members include students in flute degree programs and members of college and university ensembles. Past performances include: Terrace Hill, Salisbury House, the Butler Mansion, the Des Moines Art Center, Science Center of Iowa, Des Moines Golf and Country Club, the Embassy Club and Prairie Meadows. The “Zauberflote Experience” is intended to challenge, stimulate and inspire advanced flutists with playing and leadership skills and grow as performers.
