Youth Orchestras

The mission of the Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras is to provide young musicians of Central Iowa an opportunity to expand their musical and social perspectives while performing challenging, yet age-appropriate repertoire.

ABOUT THE DES MOINES SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRAS

Participation in the Youth Orchestras builds upon the musical instruction students receive through their private lessons and school music programs. Membership is granted by auditions held in June and September. Musicians will audition in front of the Youth Orchestras conducting staff, who will determine appropriate orchestra placement. Mid-year auditions are offered in January for musicians participating in fall sports. Musicians must be enrolled as active participants in their school music program to be eligible for participation in the Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras. The Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras are comprised of Youth Sinfonia, Youth Philharmonic and Youth Symphony Orchestra. These three ensembles provide a progressive orchestral experience for young musicians in grades 1-12. Ensemble participation builds upon a young musician’s sense of responsibility and self-motivation and strengthens listening skills and practice habit. As a member of the Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras, students learn to be both stronger leaders and reliable members of a collective group. Each of the Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras rehearse on a weekly basis and present two to four concerts per season.

“I was a participant in Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestra in my five years at the Academy. During middle and high school, playing in an orchestra outside of school improved my playing in my private lessons and at school. Now as a college student studying music, I am thankful for my experience at the Academy. The level of dedication to the music Maestro Giunta expects helped prepare me for my college studies. “ – Emily Wieland, Academy Intern and Alum ’07

ABOUT OUR YOUTH ORCHESTRAS AUDITIONS
All Des Moines Symphony Youth Orchestras current and prospective musicians must audition each year.  For these auditions, musicians are asked to have a short musical selection prepared that demonstrates their current ability level.  Audition pieces do not need to be memorized or performed with accompaniment.  Auditioning musicians will play for the following Youth Orchestras conductors, who will place musicians in the ensemble that is most appropriate to their current ability level:

Musicians in grades 1-9: Mr. Meyer & Ms. Senger
Musicians in grades 10-12: Mr. Giunta.

These auditions generally last about (2-3) minutes and are scheduled by reservation.  Auditioning musicians will not be asked for scales or sight-reading. Auditioning percussionists will need to audition on either snare drum or timpani.

To schedule an audition, please e-mail dmsymphonyacademy@gmail.com
