Annual Youth Concerts draw nearly 5,000 students
On Tuesday, March 29 and Wednesday, March 30, the musicians of the Des Moines Symphony and the Des Moines Symphony Academy’s Youth Symphony performed for nearly 5,000 area fourth- and fifth-graders as part of our annual Youth Concerts. Students traveled from as far away as Pella and Ogden, and included schoolchildren from across the Des Moines metro area.
In the weeks leading up to the concerts, teachers and students were provided with educational classroom materials on the composers and the music to be performed at the concerts as well as a special video introduction by Maestro Joseph Giunta. In three separate concerts over two days, students had the opportunity to hear symphonic masterpieces like Copland’s Hoe-down from Rodeo alongside the multimedia Symphony On A Stick, inspired by the Iowa State Fair.
For most students, our annual Youth Concerts represent their first exposure to live, orchestral music. We are pleased to be able to present these concerts thanks to support from Wells Fargo.
