Masterworks 4: Jorge Mester Conducts La Mer

DES MOINES  – The Des Moines Symphony continues its 2014-2015 77th Season with Masterworks 4: Jorge Mester conducts La Mer, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, February 7 & 2:30 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2015 at the Des Moines Civic Center (221 Walnut Street, Des Moines).

Mexican-born conductor Jorge Mester, winner of the Ditson Conductor’s Award and renowned for his leadership of the Aspen Music Festival, leads the Orchestra in one of his signature pieces: Debussy’s beloved La Mer. His interpretation of this impressionistic work depicting the sea is considered one of the most poignant and historically authentic. He is joined by pianist Robert Edward Thies, winner of the Second International Prokofiev Competition, playing Prokofiev’s rhythmic and virtuosic First Piano Concerto. Nixon Lauridsen and Virginia Croskery Lauridsen are the Guest Conductor Sponsors.

Arrive 45 minutes early to each performance and join Dr. Eric Saylor in the Stoner Theater (new location) for a Concert Prelude Talk to learn about the composers and pieces. Concert Prelude Talks are free and open to the public.
