Classical Conversations: What’s So Great About Beethoven 5?

Join Dr. Eric McIntyre of Grinnell College for an informal and enjoyable online class that discusses various topics in Classical Music. This class is designed for anyone who enjoys music — from long-time Symphony-goers to those interested in attending their first concert.
Our August topic is Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. We'll explore the symphony from a variety of perspectives, with an emphasis on ways we might listen to gain a greater appreciation for the piece – and begin to realize that this symphony might actually be as good as they say it is!
C.J. Beinert from the Cheese Shop has created a special wine and cheese pairing for the class, and will join us on Zoom to discuss his selections. Want to add wine and cheese to your class purchase? Tickets for this event are $15 per person. The Zoom link to join the class will be distributed via email the day of the event.
Adding on wine and cheese? Quantities are limited! Order early to reserve yours. Wine and cheese pre-orders will remain available until full, or two days before the event.

Eric McIntyre Instructor
Dr. Eric McIntyre is Professor of Music at Grinnell College, where he directs the Grinnell Symphony Orchestra, teaches music composition courses, and contributes to Grinnell’s Liberal Arts in Prison Program. He has presented lectures and masterclasses at Nanjing University, the Royal Academy of Music in London, University of Cape Town, international study programs in London, England and Florence, Italy, and for several years was director of brass ensembles for the Swakopmunder Musikwoche in Swakopmund, Namibia.
He is music director of the Central Iowa Symphony and has previously served as music director of the Fort Dodge Area Symphony, Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra, and the new music ensemble AURA. His original compositions have been performed around the world and received support and awards from ASCAP, the Iowa Arts Council, the American Music Center, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Equally adept as a hornist, McIntyre was a member of the Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera Orchestras and performed with the Houston Symphony. He continues to perform as a guest musician with Des Moines Symphony and Orchestra Iowa and as a chamber musician and free improviser on modern and historic natural horns and with chimeric instruments of his own creation.
Beyond his activities as a scholar and musician, McIntyre is a small-scale farmer and amateur butcher. He and his family raise turkeys and dairy goats and grow and process much of their own food.
