Tenth Annual “Oh Say, Can You Sing?” Competition

Oh say, can you sing? Audition for your chance to belt out the national anthem in front of a crowd of 100,000 people!

The Des Moines Symphony’s Annual “Oh Say, Can You Sing?” competition takes place on Saturday, June 29 during the Des Moines Arts Festival. The first fifteen singers to RSVP will be offered guaranteed audition slots, while an additional five walk-up auditions will be available in person at the Temple Chess & Poetry Garden. The winner of the competition will sing the National Anthem backed by the Des Moines Symphony at the 26th Annual Yankee Doodle Pops Concert on Wednesday, July 3 at the Iowa State Capitol.

This year’s competition will be held during the Des Moines Arts Festival on Saturday, June 29. The stage location will be just outside the Temple for Performing Arts, in the Temple Chess & Poetry Garden. Singers may choose to sing the national anthem in either A-flat or B-flat. Competitors must use the provided accompanist and will not be permitted to audition a cappella.

Signups for singers is now full; however, five walk-up contestants will be accommodated on the day of the competition. For more details or to add your name to the cancellation list, please e-mail mariah@dmsymphony.org.

In addition to singing at the Des Moines Symphony’s Yankee Doodle Pops on July 3, the competition winner receives two VIP tickets to the Des Moines Symphony’s Yankee Doodle Pops, two 2019-2020 Season Flex Packs and admission for two to one Masterworks concert intermission reception. The first runner-up receives two VIP tickets to the Des Moines Symphony’s Yankee Doodle Pops and two 2019-2020 Season Flex Packs. The second runner-up receives two VIP tickets to the Des Moines Symphony’s Yankee Doodle Pops and two 2019-2020 Masterworks tickets.

The competition will be judged by Des Moines Symphony Music Director & Conductor Joseph Giunta and representatives from Bank of the West, Hy-Vee, Casey’s General Stores, and the Polk County Board of Supervisors. Bank of the West, Casey’s General Stores, Hy-Vee and the Polk County Board of Supervisors are the principal sponsors of the Des Moines Symphony’s Yankee Doodle Pops.
