Symphony Academy Summer Strings Camp begins August 5
For the 13th year, the Des Moines Symphony Academy is thrilled to welcome students to our Summer Strings Camp. Starting on August 5, students will be welcomed to the Temple for Performing Arts for seven full days of orchestra, chamber music and fun.
This year’s camp faculty is made up of a wonderful mix of Civic Orchestra Fellows, Academy faculty, and Des Moines Symphony musicians including Rebecca Boelzner, viola; Philip Bergman, cello; Lucy Duke, violin; Renee Brechtel, violin; Madina Ahkatova, violin; Peter Roberts, piano; Mary Pshonik, cello; Matt Meyer, orchestra/violin; and Michele Senger orchestra/cello.
Students will also have the chance to participate in a number of workshops throughout the day while preparing for their concerts at the end of the week. Des Moines Symphony’s principal percussionist Aaron Williams will lead a Rhythm Workshop for students. Maestro Joseph Giunta will guide students through a Conducting Workshop. And for the first time at this camp, we are very excited to welcome Anita Mischuk who will workshop with students using Alexander Technique, an educational process that was created to retrain habitual patterns of movement and posture in order to help students prevent “bad habits” that will affect their playing. Throughout the day, students will also spend time working on improvisation and music theory, and will have the opportunity to take private lessons with faculty.
We are looking forward to a week full of great music! Join us in the Grand Hall for the Orchestra Concert at 4:30pm on Monday, August 12 and the Chamber Concert at 4:30pm on Tuesday, August 13 to see all of the progress our students have made throughout the week.
