The Symphony had launched its search for contestants earlier in the month with a call for submissions. Children and teens from across the metro area submitted videos of their conducting skills with a specific emphasis on not just musicianship but entertainment value and fun. From those submissions, seven finalists aged 4-14 were chosen to compete live onstage at Water Works Pops. The winning Mini Maestro, four year-old Elliot Shirbroun, conducted the Des Moines Symphony live as they played the “Superman” Theme.
