The Des Moines Symphony Academy holds an annual concerto competition for student musicians participating in Youth Symphony. Held in December each season, this competition is designed to provide our Youth Symphony musicians with the opportunity to perform as a featured soloist with the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra and/or Youth Symphony at a concert presentation during their season. Read on to learn about this year's winner!

Adalyn Sidon is a 17-year old violist from Des Moines, Iowa. She began studying the viola at the age of 6 with retired DMSO principal violist Sherida Josephson, and has since developed a passion for sharing her music with her community. Adalyn has studied at many summer music festivals including Madeline Island Chamber Music, Hilton Head Chamber Music, Cleveland Institute of Music, and Stringwood Chamber Music, and soloed Walton Concerto at the Birch Creek music festival. She was the principal violist of the Iowa All-State Orchestra this year and also performs in many honors orchestras across Iowa.
Through the DMSO Academy, Adalyn enjoys playing in the Honors String Quartet and being principal of the Youth Symphony. She is also an award-winning composer and has had multiple pieces premiered and commissioned by ensembles across the country. Adalyn is currently in the college audition process planning to pursue a Viola Performance degree.
We are so proud of this young musician and can't wait to hear her perform with the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra at this year's Youth Concerts!
