ReMix: History and Folklore
Sip and socialize at ReMix, a free and fun evening of mixology and music trivia held live on Zoom! Join us at 7 for a mixology class led by our friends at Bartender’s Handshake. We’ll provide a list of ingredients ahead of time and walk you through the recipe step by step. Prefer your cocktails pre-mixed? Bartender’s Handshake will offer to-go versions of the week’s featured cocktail – just place your order on their website and pick it up the day of the event.
After mixology, grab your friends and join us for a fun and challenging round of music-themed trivia hosted by trivia mastermind Marnie Strate – no musical expertise required! Your teammates can join you in person or on Zoom – we’ll sort you into breakout rooms by teams. This event is virtual, which means you can recruit your trivia-loving friends and family to join us from anywhere in the world! Gather your brainiest bunch of friends and fight it out for first place.
The game will consist of several rounds of general trivia with a few music questions peppered throughout the evening. The winning team will take home a variety of prizes, including free streaming passes to the Des Moines Symphony for each team member!
This is a free event, but you must reserve your space using the tickets link above.

Live Mixology Class
Our ReMix event will kick off with a live mixology class from our friends at The Bartender's Handshake. In keeping with the themes of our first livestreamed concert, History and Folklore, they've created a special cocktail for the evening - the Mestizaje. The concept of the drink is the same idea that inspired composer Gabriela Lena Frank's Leyendas - two cultures can coexist without the subjugation of one by the other.
Gather the following ingredients in advance to mix your cocktails live during the class! Prefer to sip a premade cocktail? You can order your Mestizaje for curbside pickup from the Bartender's Handshake on Tuesday - just visit their website to order.
Featured Cocktail: The Mestizaje
The cocktail requires 3 different liquors representing the four countries of the composers featured in our season debut, History and Folklore:
1.5 oz Granny Smith-infused Pisco (Peru)*
.75 oz Jaegermesiter (Germany)
.75 oz Dolin Blanc Vermouth (France)
1 teaspoon citric acid solution (optional)**
Lemon zest
*Combine one chopped and peeled Granny Smith apple with one bottle of Pisco (preferably Bar Sol) in a wide mouth container-- a quart-sized mason jar works great. Cover and let sit for 24 hours. Strain and it's ready to use!
**1 part citric acid power to 10 parts water
