The Fall at Varsity Cinema

The Fall at Varsity Cinema

“There will never be another like it” - Roger Ebert

Join the Varsity and Des Moines Symphony for The Fall! Out of print, unavailable on streaming services, and nearly unviewable for years, Tarsem's visionary masterpiece, The Fall, returns to theaters this fall in a stunning 4k restoration, presented by David Fincher and Spike Jonze. The Varsity Cinema is presenting The Fall in partnership with the Des Moines Symphony. Music Director and Conductor Joseph Giunta will discuss the film's unique and masterful use of the second movement of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, one of the most famous pieces in all of symphonic music.

In silent-era Hollywood, stuntman Roy Walker (Lee Pace) is brought to a hospital after an on-set accident. There, he befriends a young girl (Catinca Untaru) and tells her a fantastical tale of epic heroes taking revenge on an evil ruler. The story transports her from the hospital into the exotic landscapes of her imagination. A monumental production that filmed over four years in 28 breathtaking locations across multiple continents, with dazzling costumes designed by Academy Award winner Eiko Ishioka, The Fall remains one of the most gorgeous films ever made, a genre-defying cult classic like no other.
