Christopher Ewan

Christopher joined the Des Moines Symphony in the 2024/25 season. Before joining the DMSO he was a regular substitute with Louisville Orchestra, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He has also toured with the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig.

As an educator, he has given masterclasses at the University of Louisville, and led sectional/chamber music rehearsals with the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras in Lexington, KY. His former students hold positions with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and The Knights in New York City. Currently he is working closely with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras in Madison, WI.

He plays on a double bass made by Albert Jakstadt in 1996, a French-style bow by Armin Seebass and German-style bow by Erich Steiner.

Outside of performing and teaching, Christopher enjoys smoking cigars, seeking out Imperial Stouts with friends, listening to baseball, and sharing what he grows in his robust garden with neighbors and the local food pantry.
