Our fifth annual Fred & Charlotte Hubbell Visiting Artist In Residence Program, an initiative designed to offer unique opportunities for the organization to engage with the community in a meaningful way, takes place from September 21 to 27. The program was established through a $1 million gift from the Hubbells through the Symphony’s Sound of the City campaign.
The Harlem String Quartet joins the Symphony as the fifth annual Fred & Charlotte Hubbell Visiting Artist In Residence. They will spend nearly a week working with students in area schools, including Roosevelt High School, Hoover High School, East High School, Lincoln High School, North High School, Valley High School, Valley Southwoods, and at the Des Moines Symphony Academy. And on September 26 and 27, they'll perform Michael Abels' Urban Legends with the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra.
SCHOOL VISITS
A variety of workshops will be led by the quartet at several high schools, including Roosevelt High School, Hoover High School, East High School, Lincoln High School, North High School, Valley High School and Valley Southwoods, giving area students the chance to learn from these incredible guest artists.
DES MOINES SYMPHONY YOUTH ENSEMBLES CLINICS
Students at the Des Moines Symphony Academy will work with members of the quartet during the Fred & Charlotte Hubbell Visiting Artists In Residence week.
CONCERT PERFORMANCE
On September 26 & 27, the Orchestra performs Unity — American Mosaic and West Side Story. The concert celebrates America's 250th Anniversary, opening with Kevin Puts' Heartland and Iowa’s Linda Robbins Coleman’s In Good King Charles’s Golden Days, which set the stage for the sweeping American Mosaic by Peter Boyer, which will be narrated by renowned journalist and storyteller Harry Smith. The Harlem Quartet brings Michael Abels’ Urban Legends to life before Bernstein’s electrifying Symphonic Dances from West Side Story closes the concert.
