Our fifth annual Fred & Charlotte Hubbell Visiting Artist In Residence Program, an initiative designed to offer unique opportunities for the organization to engage with the community in a meaningful way, took place from September 21 to 27. The program was established through a $1 million gift from the Hubbells through the Symphony’s Sound of the City campaign.
The Harlem String Quartet joins the Symphony as the fifth annual Fred & Charlotte Hubbell Visiting Artist In Residence. They spent nearly a week working with students in area schools, including Roosevelt High School, Hoover High School, East High School, Lincoln High School, North High School, Valley High School, Valley Southwoods, and at the Des Moines Symphony Academy. Then on September 26 and 27, they performed Michael Abels' Urban Legends with the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra.
SCHOOL VISITS
A variety of workshops led by the quartet took place at several high schools, including Roosevelt High School, Hoover High School, East High School, Lincoln High School, North High School, Valley High School and Valley Southwoods, giving area students the chance to learn from these incredible guest artists.
Students honed not just their skills, but also learned what it means to be a professional string player. The quartet shared their experiences performing, and how they practice and prepare to stay one of the best quartets in the country!
DES MOINES SYMPHONY YOUTH ENSEMBLES CLINICS
Students at the Des Moines Symphony Academy worked with members of the quartet during the Fred & Charlotte Hubbell Visiting Artists In Residence week. The entire symphony performed for the quartet, in addition to individual coachings with the members!
