Classical Conversations: Mahler 5

Go inside the music.

Join Dr. Eric McIntyre of Grinnell College for an informal and enjoyable online class designed for anyone who enjoys music — from long-time Symphony-goers to those interested in attending their first concert.

In this class, we'll take a deep dive into the music featured in our February Masterworks concert, Mahler 5. Dr. McIntyre will be joined by our guest artist, violinist Kevin Zhu, in advance of his weekend performances of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the Symphony.

Eric McIntyre Dramatist

Eric McIntyre is Professor of Music at Grinnell College, where he directs the Grinnell Symphony Orchestra, teaches music composition courses, and contributes to Grinnell’s Liberal Arts in Prison Program. He has presented lectures and master classes at Nanjing University, the Royal Academy of Music in London, University of Cape Town, international study programs in London, England and Florence, Italy, and for several years was director of brass ensembles for the Swakopmunder Musikwoche in Swakopmund, Namibia. He has also served as program annotator for the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra in Louisiana.

Dr. McIntyre is Music Director and Conductor of the Central Iowa Symphony in Ames and has previously served as Music Director of the Fort Dodge Area Symphony, Ottumwa Symphony, and the new music ensemble AURA. His original compositions have been performed around the world and received support and awards from ASCAP, the Iowa Arts Council, the American Music Center, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

A professional hornist, Dr. McIntyre was a member of the French horn section of the Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera Orchestras and performed with the Houston Symphony. He continues to perform as a guest musician with the Des Moines Symphony and Orchestra Iowa and as a chamber musician and free improviser on modern and historic natural horns and with chimeric instruments of his own creation.

Beyond his activities as a scholar and musician, Dr. McIntyre is a small-scale farmer and amateur butcher who raises turkeys and much of his own food on his farm outside Grinnell, Iowa.

Dr. McIntyre has been hosting the Des Moines Symphony’s Classical Conversations program and its Concert Prelude Talks since the start of the 2020-2021 Season.
